We all know that Japanese denim is special and it represents the signature of most premium denim brands. That’s why the guys at DENHAM took it upon themselves this season to travel deep in to the heart of Japanese denim culture. They visited new finishing houses run by artisans who are deeply passionate about what they do. Together, they formulated recipes based on DENHAM library pieces and discovered several finishes built on a foundation of narrow loom red selvedge denim.

This month, DENHAM will release a new collection based on their findings called 1st EDITION SELECT. The denims within the collection took 6 months to create, were specially hand made in Japan and will only be available in very limited numbers. For your chance to grab a pair of these 100% handmade Japanese denim jeans, check out COLETTE (Paris) or PRESENT (London).

Denim Geek is pleased to report that J. Crew have been putting the finishing touching to a special collaboration with Japanese denim firm Warehouse. The Lot 484 jean follows Warehouse’s 800 series with a rinsed and aged 14oz vintage – made to mimic 50 year old dead stock denim.

    J. Crew Vice President of Men’s Design, Frank Muytjens is excited about the collaboration, which follows a series of exclusive Levi’s washes produced for the fashion house. He champions the authenticity of Warehouse and vintage denim and the brand have decided to use Memphis Cotton on the 484, known for it’s dramatic high and low fading. Keep an eye out for this slightly tapered jean, as it will soon be available in selected stores and online.

One of our favourite brands has gained a staple foothold in the UK this week with Naked and Famous Denim finally arriving at Selfridges. We’ve covered the brand a few times in the past and love what they’re about.

Although all of their product is made in Canada and uses 100% Japanese denim, the brand like to experiment with different denim blends.  In the SS10 collection for example, many of the pieces are made from their special silk blend or cashmere denim and along with the textures, the brand have a number of different fits to suit. Along with jeans, the collection also includes duffle bags, shirts and accessories.

If you’re out and about in London soon, pop into Selfridges and take a look, or for more information visit www.nakedandfamousdenim.com.

SPELLBOUND is a name in denim that a lot of people outside Japan aren’t too familiar with. However, since 1981 they have been turning out cutting edge denim clothing within Japan and are now making a push to break into the international market. Held in high regard amount denimheads, their jeans are best known among fans for authentic washes and high quality construction.

The Autumn/Winter 2010 collection is a denim line in which both the original texture of materials and the used look, are both constructed into a modern silhouette with attention focused on authentic sewing and details. SPELLBOUND has created a season line in which the practical details and materials of workwear are reconstructed into a modern silhouette and design. It is simply a collection of daily wear that can be worn casually, but reserves the integrity of true quality.

Evisu have had a hard time the last few years. People seemed to tire of the products and collections somewhat and the brand has had to sit back and have a bit of a re-think. We saw this sneak peek at the Fall/Winter 2010 Collection on AJANAKU and thought we had to give you guys a look-in. Evisu seemed to have revised both their denim and their garments and are concentrating on products and detailing for their second genes collection of 2010.

This new mixture of American and European design should bode well for the company who seem to have found a new direction under the watchful eyes of new CEO, Scott Morrison. We’re looking forward to seeing the whole collection and hope that it restores worldwide denimhead faith in this legendary streetwear brand. Check out more on Evisu at www.evisu.com.

Brandon Svarc: Founder of Naked and Famous Denim

Top of our christmas list this year and a personal favourite of ours is Canadian setup, Naked and Famous Denim.  We featured them a while back and have since fell in love with not only their jeans, but the history and concept of this up and coming denim brand.  Naked and Famous was founded by 26 year old Brandon Svarc and Denim Geek managed to grab a few minutes of his time earlier this week…

For readers who don’t know, can you let us know what Naked and Famous Denim is all about and what the brand represents?

Naked & Famous Denim is the opposite of everything that is wrong with the “premium” denim industry. Instead of selling “glamour” and “celebrity culture”, we just make a better jean for a better price. We find special and rare Japanese denim, then import it into Canada where we do all our production, and, we keep everything fully raw and simple.

Have you always been interested in denim?  How did you get into the industry?

My family has been in this crazy industry for over 57 years. When I was a little kid, I used to play in the warehouse amidst tons of boxes of denim. So I would say that denim is in my blood.

If any, which other brands influenced Naked and Famous Denim?

We love the innovation and quality of several Japanese heritage brands like Samurai, Skull, Oni, Momotaro, Studio D’Artisan, etc. But we are not a “repro” or “revival” brand. We simply try to take pieces of influence from this movement and make it affordable to the fashion and forward-thinking market.  I do also love what Common Projects is doing, they just keep it simple and focus on quality materials rather than “design”.

Why concentrate on three styles?  In the future will Naked and Famous be making more fits?

We are very happy with our 3 fits right now. We’ve got skinny, tapered and straight fits, which should be able to satisfy most consumers. We have no need for bootcut, flare or baggy jeans, we’ll leave those cuts to the “Hollywood” and “Glamour” brands who certainly have that market covered.

Along with the quality japanese denim, we love the pop-art style leather patch.  Can you tell us a little more about it?

The pop-art patch is a piece of satire. Just like 1950s pop-art was intended to make fun of our culture who obsessed with the Ideal Blond figure, we intend to make fun of the current celebrity-obsessed culture, and in hand, celebrity-endorsed denim brands.

Can you tell Denim Geek readers about your unique silk denim?

The silk denim is pretty neat. It contains a blend of 30% silk yarn, which after wear turns quite soft but increases the tensile strength of the denim.  If you like blended denim, we also have cashmere denim (with 8% cashmere) and Kevlar denim (with 20% Kevlar, commonly used to make body armour).

Where do see the brand going in the next few years?

We are growing quite quickly and are expanding our product line and reach. We have already added shirts, suits, belts, ties, baseball gloves, and will soon add sweatshirts, tshirts, cardigans, duffle bags, leather goods and more.  We already sell to great stores all over the world and will expand of presence outside our strongest current markets of USA, Canada and Japan.

    Edwin AW09 SEN Jeans

You guys know how much we love Edwin Jeans.  We’ve been fans of the brand for years and will continue to follow them as long as they keep churning out quality denims.  We recieved an E-Mail from our friends at Aphrodite Clothing this morning letting us know that their new Edwin for Autumn/Winter 09 is online and asking if we’d take a quick look.  There aren’t many pairs on their site (6 in total), but what’s in stock is most definately the pick of the crop.

    Edwin AW09 SEN Jeans

The highlights for us have got to be the two SEN styles.  These are available in regular and skinny fits and are pieced together with Edwin’s 11oz signature red and white listed selvedge denim.  The skinny SENs were available last season but the regular fit, loom stay jeans are a new addition to the collection.  Both pairs of jeans feature visible pocket selvedge and reinforced riveting.  The back pocket ‘W’ detailing and contrast stitching really makes both of these low rise denims stand out in a crowd.

Aphrodite Clothing also have the Edwin WIN Rebel Vintage, ED-39 and Nashville jeans in stock.  You can check out their collection at http://www.aphrodite1994.com/edwin-20.phtml or get more information on all of the different Edwin jeans at http://www.edwin-europe.com/denim_mens.php.

    Evisu Chinos at Oki-Ni

It’s been another busy week for me and I’m planning to make more time to get more posts up on here.  I’ve been ploughing around the net again this week looking for new collections and great denims to recommend to you guys and there aren’t many better in online stores at the minute than the new Evisu jeans at Oki-Ni.

New pairs have been added to their site within the last week, all priced at around £160.  Evisu have taken a slightly different approach to their jeans this season and compared to the last few years, the collection concentrates more on quality fabrics and fits, rather than paintings and high colour embroidery.  The brand has fallen out of favour with a few consumers lately because of loud patterns and heavy design work.  Evisu jeans are still made from some of best denims available and their quality is undeniable.

There are some awesome Evisu Chino Jeans on there.  Chinos are nearly as old as jeans and got their name from American pilots wearing them on missions to Asia.  The new season Evisu Chinos have a slightly tapered leg, are cut slim aross the waist and according to Oki-Ni, are a reproduction of an old American pair of Chinos found in Tokyo.

    Evisu Classic Jeans at Oki-Ni

Our favourite pair of Evisu Jeans from this season are also available at Oki-Ni.  The Evisu Classic Jeans are plain and are cut from the 0005 block.  They have a slimmer leg and are inspired by the classic Wrangler shape.  As with other seasons, the Classic Jeans are made from Evisu number 2 vintage sanforized denim.  The number 2 denim bears the same selvedge as number 1 but is pre-shunk before being sewn into a pair of jeans.  This right hand twill denim weighs in heavily at 13.5oz and is loomed in Osaka, Japan.

When most people think about Japanese denim, names that spring to mind might be Evisu, Edwin and maybe some European brands such as Nudie and Diesel which use Japanese denim to create their jeans.  However, in the last few years, a few lesser known brands have cropped up and are making a name for themselves in the USA and Europe because of their high grade manufacturing, eye-catching designs and serious style.  For those of you who don’t already know, a few of these brands are often discussed at the Superfuture Denim Forum.

We here are Denim Geek are huge fans of all things Japanese and thought we’d recommend three of our favourite brands to you guys.  All three are currently available from top notch US denim store, Self Edge.

    1. Dry Bones

    Self Edge x Dry Bones x Superfuture = SEXDBXS09

Although we’ve mentioned above that newer brands are cropping up.  Dry Bones are a company with over 20 years experience in creating beautiful denim garments and come from the second generation of denim brands worldwide, fitting somewhere between the first big american brands and newer brands from the last 10 years.

    Self Edge x Dry Bones x Superfuture = SEXDBXS09

Dry Bones is based in Tokyo and is heavily influenced by 1940s and 50s rock n’ roll styles.  The brand was founded by a few Japanese denim geeks who adore rock music.  Their denim lines are stylish and timeless and it really is a wonder why the brand has taken so long to find it’s way into the spotlight.

    2. Skull Jeans by an Alchemist

    Skull 5507xx 6x6

    Skull 5507xx 6x6

After his first brand, Fabfour, Japanese designer Hiroshi Yamazaki created Skull Jeans by an Alchemist.  This newer brand’s main focus is how to apply their quality denim to their rock inspired designs.  The brand is rather small but creates jeans which are simple, yet beautiful and stylish.  The brand are now becoming known for creating mainly slim and skinny jeans with a modern twist on the cuts and for using top quality, durable denim.  The guys at Skull Jeans will stop at nothing to make their products stand out and you will be noticed rocking a pair of these.

    3. Real Japan Blues

Real Japan Blues 106BSP - Slim Straight

Our third recommended brand is this Japan inspired post is Real Japan Blues or RJP for short.  This brand hails from Nagano in central Japan and the company is known to style nerds for their slightly crazy approach to creating even the simplest of garments.  Real Japan Blues used techniques which other brands would not dream of including rope dying and complete pattern hand painting.  Their heavy denims are made from the finest quality cotton from Zimbabwe and tends to look ‘hairy’ indigo look after the first wash.  These jeans will fade like nothing else.

Real Japan Blues 106BSP - Slim Straight

All of these amazing Japanese brands and more are available in the USA and online from Self Edge, the high quality denim store based in San Francisco, which should be proud to carry what Denim Geek would regard some of the greatest denim brands in the world.  Check them out at www.selfedge.com.

Levis Orange Tab Jacket from End Clothing

We knew it was going to happen eventually. Although they’ve never gone out of style with the old guys down at your local bingo club, or Jonny Borrell from Razorlight, denim jackets are back with a bang. It’s once again time to search your wardrobe and dust off the jacket that you thought you’d never wear again.

Fear not though, if you don’t own a denim jacket or haven’t really been interested before, there has never been a better time to jump on the bandwagon. Denim Geek has decided to give you guys a little bit of a head start and suggest some of the best denim jackets that we’ve found recently.

Now, don’t skip down to the next post just yet. Denim jackets are a lot different today to what they were 10 years ago. The recent demand for vintage and raw denim has seen several brands change their jacket designs and styles somewhat. You might be surprised.

This jacket will be ideal for the coming months as it features a full plaid lining and handwarmer pockets. It is available at End Clothing for £115.00. Edwin Flat Head Denim Jacket: £120 at ASOS

Bluebell by Wrangler Jackets at ASOS.com

Probably our favourite jackets we’ve stumbled across lately though, are also available from ASOS and come from a brand which is now sometimes overlooked.  Bluebell is a collection from Wrangler which reshapes the brand’s illustrious heritage and concentrates on sharp, modern clothing.  These two button-up, dry denim jackets are based on the original 1947 and 1949 fits and feature contrast stitching and front pockets.  You can check them out at http://tinyurl.com/bluebell1 and http://tinyurl.com/bluebell2.
